EXPRESSIVE DRAWING for adults & teens: A mindful art workshop for beginners (1 of 4) @ Hamilton House | Bristol | United Kingdom

Art for the afraid presents…

Expressive Drawing: A Mindful Art Workshop for beginners or nervous returners to Art. (1 of 4 workshops)

With local artist Emma Burleigh.

This is one of a series of four workshops: you can attend any or all of them. Book all four in one go for a discount.

Do you long to recover the joy of drawing you felt in early childhood and do you feel discouraged?

Then this workshop is for you!

This workshop aims to coax out your creativity, calm the chattering mind, and experience the relaxing effects of shifting into a mindful, non-judgemental ‘state of being’ which is so integral to the practice of drawing.

In this first of a series of four workshops we’ll focus on some key skills for both observational and imaginative drawing to create your own lively and authentic images.

There will be an emphasis on encouraging the spacious mind state that allows your creativity to unfold. The art of drawing allows you to relax into the present moment, letting go of fixed ideas about how things should look or judgements about whether or not your artwork is “good”.

Practitioners of meditative drawing report feeling ‘more alive’, more aware of the beauty in the world around us, and more at ease. Meditative drawing can help us to greater well-being: we feel more creative, more self- accepting and become less hard on ourselves. Although outcome is less important than process, you will also find yourself drawing more skilfully and more expressively by the end of the day.

No previous experience of meditation or art is required!

Previous participants say:

“You demystified drawing for me.”

A very enjoyable, relaxing and peaceful journey to becoming/discovering the artist within, changing perceptions and gathering skills.”

I am as a result of the class more relaxed, feeling more in tune with my creativity, and more confident about creating. Brilliant!”

“Emma has nurtured my fragile confidence and enabled it to evolve into my own artistic voice, allowing me to find my full expression whilst also helping me to stay grounded in basic technique and method.”

MAKING COLOUR SING for adults & teens: A mindful art workshop for beginners @ Hamilton House
May 22 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
MAKING COLOUR SING for adults & teens: A mindful art workshop for beginners @ Hamilton House | Bristol | United Kingdom

This is a workshop to make you fall in love with colour!

We’ll begin by going right to the heart of colour theory and watercolour technique. We’ll be mixing and combining colours and exploring the expressive potential of complementary, harmonious and tertiary colours.

We’ll also look at some ways to activate your imagination, building your confidence in your own creativity. I’ll share some tips and ideas drawn from my own way of working, where colour plays a central and passionate part of my personal artistic practice . We will make some playful ‘miniature’ paintings in watercolour and pastel which will reveal to you how to balance and harmonise colours to create beauty and atmosphere.

For inspiration we’ll take a look at the rich tradition of miniature painting, and we’ll respond visually to some of the distinct styles and jewel like colours that can be found in paintings from India to Persia to Europe.

We’ll focus on how to paint areas of fine detail, and on how to combine this delicacy with a free and relaxed approach which allows watercolour to do what it does best, glow with a fresh luminosity.

You’ll complete the workshop by making some tiny miniature paintings of your own, inspired by a variety of visual treasures from past and present, mixed with a dose of your own inner vision!

This is a Mindful Art Workshop for beginners or nervous returners to Art. It is the third of a series of four stand alone Sunday morning workshops with local artist Emma Burleigh: you can attend any or all of them.

If you long to recover the joy of painting you felt in early childhood but feel discouraged, then this workshop is designed for you. No previous ‘talent’ is required. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never painted before and have no idea what colour goes with what! If you are an experienced artist looking to develop your knowledge of colour you are also welcome. I am an experienced teacher/ former Head of Art (PGCE, MA and CRB checked) so this class is also open to all teenagers.

My teaching methods aim to shift you into a non self-critical state of mind where you will find yourself able to draw what you see without ‘effort’ or over-trying. It’s a supportive and clearly guided learning environment where ‘failures’ are seen as an essential part of the learning journey.

Previous participants say:

“Great workshop. I really enjoyed learning about art and exploring with a paintbrush again, something I’ve not done since primary school!”

“Life doesn’t have edges. It’s blurry. Exploring colour helps you feel comfortable with this.”

“I am as a result of the class more relaxed, feeling more in tune with my creativity, and more confident about creating. Brilliant.”
